According to the case, two Lithuanians unlawfully purchased about six kilograms of cannabis and components in Spain in the end of March and later hid the drugs in spare tires of a truck headed to Lithuania. More than 3 kg of cannabis were seized by French customs officers at the French border, however, the remaining 2.5 kg successfully arrived in Lithuania, prosecutors said.
"As the French officers submitted the information in a timely manner, the individuals were immediately detained," prosecutor Nida Urbonavičienė in charge of the investigation said.
In her words, the short duration of the investigation is due to cooperation with the European Union's (EU) institution Eurojust, which fights organized crime and terrorism.
"Thanks to the efforts of Laima Čekelienė, Lithuanian representative at Eurojust, we managed to receive the case materials from France in just one day," the prosecutor said.
Both detained men are under the age of 30 and have repeated criminal records. They remain in custody. If found guilty, they may face up to 15 years in prison.
