Following intense consultations with Russia over the last six months, Lithuanian diplomats managed to reach an agreement on signing a pact settling claims to real estate in Moscow and Vilnius.
For years, Russian authorities have avoided any talks on handing over ownership of the Lithuanian Embassy's building in Moscow and a guest house, both designed and built by Lithuanian specialists during Soviet times. Russians have also delayed legalizing a house of Lithuania's first Ambassador to Russia, Jurgis Baltrušaitis, as belonging to Lithuania.
Russia has demanded land and buildings in Vilnius in exchange for Moscow property.
Sources have told the Lietuvos Rytas that Lithuanian diplomats have managed to reach agreement based on which Lithuania will get the embassy building, the guest house, and Baltrušaitis' house in Moscow, and Russia will receive the embassy building in Vilnius and a nearby large land plot where Russian diplomats plan to build an ambassadorial residence.
