Faina Kukliansky, acting chairwoman of the community, says re-establishment of independence is important to all residents of Lithuania who love and cherish their home country.

"We celebrate restitution of Lithuania's independence and invite the society and the media to mark the important day at the synagogue,“ Kukliansky said in a press release.

Tobijas Jafetas, chairman of the union of former ghetto and concentration camp prisoners, said that Lithuanian Holocaust survivors did not feel free until restoration of independence in 1990.

"About 80 percent of the members of our union survived the atrocities of the Holocaust in Lithuania. We survived because we were rescued by the people of Lithuania, therefore, we cherish our country's independence greatly. It was only after March 11 (1990) that we felt free again, we had an opportunity to restore the Lithuanian Jewish Community, establish the union of former ghetto prisoners and concentration camps, other organizations. March 11 is a very important day for all people of Lithuania," Jafetas said.
