The Jewish Community of Lithuania will hold a ceremony of reading the names of people who were deported from Lithuania to Siberia under the Soviets. Thus the Jewish Community will commemorate the 72nd anniversary of the start of deportations.

Deportee names will be read out at a commemoration of the Day of Mourning and Hope at Vilnius Synagogue.

Faina Kuklyansky, chairwoman of the Jewish Community of Lithuania, told BNS on Thursday that names of deportees will be read out irrespective of their nationality.

"We believe that damage and crimes during the 1941 deportations were done to all people of Lithuania, irrespective of their nationality. We want to pay homage and commemorate not only deported Jews but all people of Lithuania, therefore, we'll read out names of people irrespective of their nationality," she said.

Readings of Holocaust victims have been held in Vilnius and Kaunas, the second largest city in Lithuania, several years now.

Around 300,000 people were deported from Lithuania to Soviet gulags during the entire period of Soviet deportations.
