"We are currently working on an agreement between the Ministry of Education and Science and Bishop Antanas Baranauskas' Foundation. The allocated funds should reach the Punsk education institutions by the start of the academic year," the ministry told in a statement to BNS.
The Government of Lithuania has decided to allocate 400,000 litas (around EUR 116,000) to Lithuanian schools in Punsk.
In May, Punsk authorities decided to close two Lithuanian schools due to a lack of funds. Schools in Navinykai and Pristavonys will be closed in September and only the Lithuanian school in Vidugiriai will continue operating.
Following the closure of the two schools, classes in the Lithuanian language would still be held only in Punsk's Darius and Girėnas School, the March 11 Lyceum and Žiburys School in Sejny, which survives only on financial support from Lithuania.
Lithuania allocated 350,000 litas to Lithuanian schools in Poland in 2011.
