"It is thanks to you that the eight decades of Lithuanian victorious series in European and world basketball continue. I am convinced that your determined deed will inspire us to set ourselves big objectives, overcome all difficulties and win the way you did," the president said.

The highest awards went to coaches Jonas Kazlauskas and Gintaras Krapikas.

Earlier on Tuesday, the EuroBasket 2013 vice-champions were honored at the parliament. Parliamentary Speaker Vydas Gedvilas presented them with silver medals of the Seimas and silver spoons manufactured by the disabled and dedicated to the Lithuanian presidency of the European Union (EU) Council.

"Along with Lithuania, the Seimas and the people of the Seimas want to thank you, as well. You did well at the EuroBasket 2013, you may not understand it yet and may not appreciate it yet, however, I know from my experience that the understanding will come later," Gedvilas said.

Robertas Javtokas, captain of the national team, presented the Seimas speaker with a basketball signed by all players and coaches.

The government earmarked a prize of 250,000 litas (EUR 72,500) to the national team.

In EuroBasket 2013 finals in Slovenia on Sunday, the Lithuanians suffered a defeat (66:80) to France, which won the championship for the first time in its history. The Lithuanian national team won silver after an 18-year break.

During its six appearances in the European Championship, the Lithuanian team has won gold in 1937, 1939 and 2003.
