"Symbolically, on these days of great importance for the Baltic states (16 February in Lithuania, 24 February in Estonia, 18 November in Latvia), three national flags are raised in their capital cities. It is a tradition that demonstrates our unity and joint aspirations as well as an invitation to further strengthen dialogue and cooperation between the three Baltic countries through deeds and actions," Grybauskaitė wrote in her letter of congratulations.

The president wished the Estonian leader and the people of his country success and prosperity.

Estonia declared independence on 24 February 1918. Just like Lithuania, Estonia had to defend its statehood in armed battles. The following day after the declaration of independence, Tallinn was seized by Germany, and Estonia had to wait until 11 November of that year to regain control of the country.
