Lithuanian President: Double standards in EU relations with Russia and Ukraine unacceptable

Some European countries sometimes attempt to apply double standards while dealing with Russia and Ukraine, and the scheme is unacceptable, Lithuanian President Dalia Grybauskaitė said before the European Union's (EU) summit in Brussels on Thursday.

"We sometimes see some European countries trying to apply double standards, for example – Ukraine cannot do this, while Russia can do much more. Without a doubt, this should not be possible," the president told Brussels journalists.

Grybauskaitė emphasized that "the EU should be equally principled and demanding."

"Values of transparency, responsibility and human rights are equal, regardless of which countries they're applied in," she said.

In the Lithuanian president's words, "the EU and Russia should communicate as equal partners so that it benefits both sides."

EU's relations with Russia will be among the key international topics to be discussed in the European Council on Thursday and Friday.

Lithuania has repeatedly declared its determination to support Ukraine's closer relations with the EU; however, the Western world has warned that persecution of the opposition could hinder the plans for closer ties and signing of the association treaty.
