"January 13 is a crucial day when Lithuania defended its independence. However, freedom should not be taken for granted and every one of us should cherish and defend it. In tribute to freedom fighters, let's remember that the candlelight is not just a sign of mourning and grief. It is a symbol of hope and strength," the president said.

On Friday morning, the civil campaign of lighting candles was held in schools and state institutions.

In early hours of January 13, 1991, 14 unarmed civilians were killed in the armed attack of the Vilnius TV Tower and the Radio and Television Committee building by the Soviet Union's military units. The Soviet units then did not dare attacking the Supreme Council.
