In a statement on Tuesday, President Grybauskaitė invited all communities in the country to share ideas on marking the February 16 Independence Day and together make a calendar of festive events of the whole country.

"February 16th is a special day for every Lithuanian. It's the birthday of our state. When we couldn't celebrate it freely, we kept our tricolor in our hearts. Today we can freely wave it in every Lithuanian's home. Let us make February 16 the day of love for our homeland and the day of our unity," Grybauskaitė said.

According to the president, every year, people in the country find increasingly original ways to celebrate the Independence Day. Last year, a tricolor was flown above the river Nemunas in Kaunas, the second largest city in Lithuania, a national belt was weaved in the town of Prienai, Lithuanian poetry was read on buses by local actors in the northern city of Šiauliai.
