Skirmantas Knieza of Julius Janonis Gymnasium in Šiauliai, northern Lithuania, came in first among schoolchildren who took part in the final stage of the exam at the House of Europe in Vilnius.

Among university students, Vytautas Valaitis of the ISM University of Management and Economics in Vilnius scored best.

Among those who got to the final after successfully completing the first-stage test online, Indrė Sasnauskaitė produced the best result.

Meanwhile, teacher Zita Ciciurkienė from Rytas Gimnasium in Pabradė, a town in the eastern district of Švenčionys, was the best in the teacher category.

Vytenis Kviklys of the European Commission Representation in Lithuania, which organized the exam, told BNS that good performance of school children has become a tradition of the exam held for the fourth year running.

"Schoolchildren were the best performers in the final exam. We might say that it was the largest pre-final selection they had to go through as there were 22,000 of them and only 25 got into the final. It's rather common as over the past years schoolchildren have performed better than teachers. Perhaps they are better prepared and perhaps they understand questions better," he said.

The winners will go on excursions to EU institutions and also received tablet computers and other prizes.

Over 25,000 people took part in the first stage of the exam, and 70 got into the final.
