"One of the soldiers injured in an explosion in southern Afghanistan on 3 May is still in a serious but stable condition due to multiple injuries sustained during the explosion. His life is not in danger. The soldier has been moved from the mission area and is being treated in a military hospital in Germany," Captain Skomantas Povilionis, spokesman for the Lithuanian chief of defense, told BNS.

Three Lithuanian troops from the special operations squadron Aitvaras were injured during the incident. Povilionis said that the other two troops sustained lighter injuries and were still in the mission area.

The Lithuanian special operations squadron has been deployed in southern Afghanistan since 2007. The exact number of troops is not disclosed, but it is said that "up to 100" troops might be deployed in the area at one time.

The majority of Lithuanian troops – around 150 – are deployed in a more peaceful Ghor province where Lithuania is leading a Provincial Reconstruction Team.

So far only one Lithuanian soldier has been killed in Afghanistan during the ISAF operation in the country.
