Bilateral agreements guarantee free tuition for a semester or an academic year. Exchange students also receive scholarships from the sending or the hosting country, dormitory accommodation, and have their travel costs and, in some cases, health insurance, visa, and other costs reinbursed.
The majority of the 18 agreements have been signed with countries in the European Union (EU), in addition to China, Israel, Mexico, Turkey, and Japan.
For the 2011-2012 academic year, the ministry has received applications from 192 Lithuanian students, including 96 who were granted funding, namely, 43 scholarships for summer courses, 22 scholarships for partial studies and 31 scholarships for research internships. Most students went to Poland, Turkey, and Estonia.
Some 124 applications from foreign citizens were received for the 2011-2012 academic year from Polish, Russian, Uzbek, US, Japanese, and Israeli students.
In addition to bilateral exchange agreements, university students can study abroad on international programmes like Erasmus, Nordplus, etc.
