Netherlands dedicate tulip breed to Lithuania

The Kingdom of the Netherlands has presented Lithuania with an original present - a new breed of tulips, dedicated to the Lithuanian presidency of the European Union (EU) Council and the 25-year anniversary of the Baltic Way.

Architects from the world's largest flower garden in Keukenhof are coming to Vilnius in October to design and plant a huge flower arrangement, with the help of Vilnius florists and school students.

A 100-square-meter mosaic will be made of yellowish red tulips and other flowers to picture the Iron Wolf, one of the symbols of Vilnius, the Dutch Embassy says.

The new variety of tulips dedicated to Lithuania does not have a name yet, therefore, the embassy has invited students of Vilnius schools to propose their version of the name.

This is not the first breed of tulips related to Lithuania. Before the 2008 visit of Dutch Queen Beatrix, a light pink tulip was developed and named after Lithuania's then first lady Alma Adamkienė. The tulips still bloom in the garden of the President's Office and the presidential residence.
