The checkpoint Rambynas-Dubkai will be constructed together with a bridge connecting Panemunė and Sovetsk, a project agreed upon between Lithuania and the Russian Federation last year.
Following through the decision will require adding a new point to the Lithuanian-Russian agreement on border crossing points. The amendment will take effect after harmonization between relevant institutions and exchange of notes between both countries.
Construction of the new bridge between Panemunė and Sovetsk is estimated at over 100 million litas (EUR 28.9m); furthermore, the bridge is expected to increase the capacity of checkpoints between Lithuania and Kaliningrad.
The work planned on the Lithuanian side may reach a total cost of about 60-70 million litas. Russia has already completed the road to the bridge and is preparing for bridge construction.
