"Such an event would be beneficial for the state. Especially if we manage to gain economic benefit. The key question today is money. The state definitely cannot afford that but if we were able to manage with minimal expenses, then we need to seriously consider this opportunity and make a decision," Gedvilas said after a Thursday meeting with Paolo Barelli, president of the International Swimming Federation.
The speaker pledged to discuss the issue with the prime minister, finance minister and managements of the Department of Physical Education and Sports.
The fact that Vilnius may host the championships was also confirmed by the ISF president. He visited arenas in Vilnius and Kaunas, the second largest city in Lithuania, and said he was convinced that they might be used for the championships.
"Following golden medals won by Rūta Meilututė at London Olympics and the world championships in Istanbul, we can say that swimming is experiencing a renaissance. It is important not only as a sport. It is equally important to teach children to swim and be safe in the water," Gedvilas said.
