Cooperation with Canada should be strengthened in fields of collective defense and NATO air-policing mission that is crucial for both Lithuania and the Alliance.

"A NATO Energy Security Center is being founded in Lithuania, therefore, in the president's words, Canada's participation in the center's activities would not only step up bilateral ties but would also be beneficial for all of the Alliance," the President's Office said.

In Grybauskaitė's words, Lithuania also attaches importance to Canada's assistance in nuclear security matters in connection to highest nuclear safety requirements in nuclear facilities that are under construction or in the projecting phase.

Žalys will replace Gintė Bernadeta Damušis in the ambassadorial post in Canada on 2 August.

Since 1990, Žalys has served in different divisions of the Foreign Ministry, as well as in Lithuania's diplomatic missions in the United States, Moldova and the Russian Kaliningrad region.
