Russia’s Customs Service instructed to suspend imports of Lithuanian dairy products

Russia’s Customs Service was instructed on Monday by Gennady Onishchenko, the head of the Russian consumer protection watchdog Rospotrebnadzor, to suspend the imports of Lithuanian dairy products and sent those instructions to regional offices, a representative of the Customs Service has confirmed to BNS.

So far, the ban only applies to imports of dairy products. However, the consumer protection service previously claimed that it also had concerns about the Lithuanian meat and fish products.

“We received a letter from Rospotrebnadzor on Monday. It tells us to suspend the entry of Lithuanian dairy products. It concerns only dairy products,” the representative of Russia’s Customs Service told BNS.

He added that Onishchenko’s order had actually come into effect on the date of its signing. The Customs does not have the right to let the products enter Russia’s territory without Rospotrebnadzor’s consent after receiving the order.

Russia accounted for 33.7 percent of Lithuania’s dairy exports in January through July and the European Union (EU) – for 58.9 percent, data from the Lithuanian statistics office shows.
