The plaque was unveiled by Lithuania's Foreign Vice-Minister Evaldas Ignatavičius over the weekend. Reinys died in a Vladimir prison in 1953 after being jailed following Soviet occupation of Lithuania.
"In tribute to Reinys memory, we recall his life and tragic fate as a page of the painful and tragic history shared by Lithuania and Russia, we're not turning the page, let's keep it in our memory and hope that we'll be able to open new pages in history built on mutual respect, good will and cooperation," the vice-minister said.
Among participants he ceremony were Lithuania's Ambassador to Russia Renatas Norkus, Cultural Attaché Faustas Latėnas, Vilnius Archdiocese Monsignor Robertas Salasevičius, Russian Catholic Church Archbishop Pavel Pezzi and representatives of the Orthodox Church. The plaque was unveiled in the Catholic Church of Vladimir's St. Mary.
Delegated by the Christian Democrats, Reinys served as foreign minister for six months in 1925-1926 and was a lecturer at Vytautas Magnus University in Kaunas.
After the war, he protested against the occupational administration's moves to restrict rights of the Church and church-goers. In 1947, he was sentenced to eight years in prison for anti-Soviet activities and died six years later. He was buried in a mass grave.
