US Ambassador to NATO: Barack Obama to decide on Afghanistan after meeting Hamid Karzai

US President Barack Obama will decide on the presence of troops in Afghanistan after 2014 “relatively soon” after meeting with Afghanistan's President Hamid Karzai, US Ambassador to NATO Ivo Daalder said in Vilnius on Thursday.

"The decision will be made relatively soon after the meeting is concluded," Daalder told BNS.

In his words, the United States will make a decision to ensure that Afghanistan never becomes a safe haven for terrorists, and it will be possible to provide sufficient support to the Afghan security forces so they can take care of security in Afghanistan.

"No decisions have been made, no decisions will be made in the meeting with the president. President Obama will, after this meeting, on the basis of this consultation with Afghanistan, on the basis of consultations with Allies and partners, determine what the US contribution should be after the current mission, which is still going on for another two years, comes to end at the end of December 2014," said the ambassador.

Earlier this week, the White House said it could not rule out the “zero option” - full withdrawal of US troops from Afghanistan.

The scenario and the response of Afghan officials should top the agenda of the talks between Obama and Karzai, which are scheduled to take place in Washington on Friday.
