"The community, the guests decided that the school needed a monument. The memory is fading when you don’t see the person. Although he was a great man, new generations come to the school, and the memory needs to be rekindled," Janina Vysocka, director of Vilnius John Paul II Pro-Gymnasium, told BNS on Monday.
In her words, it is hoped that a monument outside the Polish school will be erected by 2014, when the school will mark the 20th anniversary. The plan still needs permission of Vilnius City Municipality.
Over 300 representatives of 90 schools named after Pope John Paul II gathered to a forum in Vilnius last weekend. The majority of these schools are located in Poland, but there are also such schools in Germany, Ukraine, and other countries.
Polish-born John Paul II led the Catholic Church between 1978 and 2005. He visited Lithuania in August 1993.

Vilnius considers building monument to John Paul II
Following a meeting in Vilnius last weekend, representatives of schools named after Pope John Paul II said they are considering the idea to build a monument in the Lithuanian capital to honor the former head of the Catholic Church who died seven years ago.
