Žalgiris Kaunas point guard Ibrahim Jaaber leaves basketball club for religious beliefs

Lithuania's basketball club Žalgiris Kaunas has received unexpected news on the eve of an important ULEB Euroleague Top 16 match with Alba Berlin (Germany) – point guard Ibrahim Jaaber informed the club he was leaving the team for personal reasons.

In a letter to the club, the American-born naturalized Bulgarian player said his decision was based on personal beliefs, Žalgiris, Lithuanian Basketball League champion said on its website.

"Jaaber stated he disagreed with the jersey advertisement rules common in basketball. After observing the LKL game with Lietkabelis Panevėžys, he expressed indignation over the performance of cheerleaders during breaks. He listed the reasons in a letter to the club, saying he would not play in our or any other European team," said Vitoldas Masalskis, sports director at Žalgiris.

Jaaber, who is a Muslim, spent an average of 21 minutes on the court, scoring 5.9 points, making 2.2 assists, 2.2 rebounds and 1.9 steals.
