“The Women in Science program is one of the best joint initiatives of UNESCO and the private sector, a prime example of business and science cooperation and social responsibility, encouraging young women to pursue a career in science, helping young scientists stay in science overcoming critical stages of life, and encouraging society to appreciate the importance of science for the common good” said Asta Junevičienė, Secretary General of the Lithuanian National Commission for UNESCO.
Women-scientists are invited to easily apply for “Women in Science” programme from January 27 to March 6, 2020, filling in the application form “For Women In Science” on website www.forwomeninscience.com .
After careful evaluation of all applications by the scientific committee, one prize in each country will be awarded to a women scientist up to 40 years old with a doctor’s degree for research in the fields of life, environmental sciences, physics and engineering. In addition, two prizes in Latvia, one in Lithuania and one in Estonia will be awarded to PhD students up to 33 years old to finalize thesis research in the fields of life, environmental sciences, physics and engineering.
Since 2005 when the L'ORÉAL Baltic programme was launched in Latvia, 45 women-scientists from Latvia have received this recognition for their work in the science field. In addition, already for the fourth year in a row, the programme is present in the Baltic region and four awardees from Lithuania and four from Estonia have been awarded for their work in science field.
Last year seven fellows from the Baltics each received the € 6,000 prize. Two scientists from Lithuania were awarded: VU GMC PhD student Milda Alksne and her efforts to create an artificial bone graft that can be used to repair bone tissue damage in the human body. Another one - Dr. Jurgita Skieceviciene's project aimed to evaluate whether genomic biomarkers circulating in the blood are suitable for non-invasive diagnosis, monitoring and prognosis of gastric cancer.
The program was brought to Latvia by the L´Oréal Baltic For Women in Science Program Honorable Patroness , Professor, Dr. Vaira Vike-Freiberga (President of Latvia 1999-2007). Today L'ORÉAL Baltic “For Women in Science” Program is implemented in cooperation with Academies of Sciences and UNESCO National Commissions in Latvia, Estonia and Lithuania.
This is the only support program in the Baltic States for women scientists. The program promotes the professional development of Baltic scientists, helping them achieve new goals and creating benefit for both science and society.
The global FWIS program was launched in 1998. Since then L`ORÉAL Foundation and the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization UNESCO have been committed to women in science, to increase the number of women working in scientific research. That is why, for the past 22 years, the L’Oréal-UNESCO For Women in Science program has worked to honour and accompany women researchers at key moments in their careers, contributing significantly to the development of science and to gender equality in science.
