Feyenoord fans show Gervinho a bannana ballon during Feyenoord vs AS Roma
Feyenoord fans just threw an inflatable banana at Gervinho. Disgusting!
There was a disgusting racist incident in the Europa League tonight, during Feyenord’s game with Roma.
Just before half-time, an inflatable banana was thrown in the direction of Roma’s Gervinho, in what was a clear racist act by the Dutch fans in question.
Bananas have been vilely used by racists as a racist gesture towards black players down the years, with players like John Barnes having bananas physically thrown at them from the stands.
Indeed, just last year Barcelona full-back Dani Alves had a banana thrown at him by a Villareal fan, and the Brazilian reacted brilliantly by simply picking it up and eating it, which provoked a social media campaign encouraging people to eat bananas, so as to essentially eliminate the supposed racist symbolism of the fruit.
In this case, the Feyenord fans in question have used an inflatable object, but the racist intention is the very same.
The fourth official took the object from the playing surface and reported the incident to the referee, meaning it will surely be included in his official match report, which will induce UEFA to act.
