Nadal came into the match full of confidence, having been unbeaten on European clay that year, taking the titles in Monte Carlo, Barcelona and Rome, as well as Brazil and Acapulco earlier that year in South America
Federer was also confident, having won the Hamburg Masters. To top this off, their most recent meeting (Miami final that year) had gone 5 sets. A great match was on the cards.
