Flowstone Climbing Catfish (Loricariidae family)

2015-05-06 14:51
In June 2012 a small team of cavers traveled to Tena Ecuador to begin the systematic documentation of caves in the region. They discovered the flora and fauna of the caves to be extensive. One of the most interesting discoveries was that of a catfish that could climb several meters of vertical flowstone. Some have noted that this particular fish is down climbing. The fish move up and down the waterfall at will, most likely entering the cave from the infeeder stream at the top of the waterfall. The passage at the top of the falls was too small for people to enter and follow it, although it presumably comes in from the surface somewhere along the way and is a large enough opening for the fish.
