Monday last week a wolf was shot on a field east of Ulfborg in West Jutland. On the same day, a 66-year-old man from the local area was charged for killing the wolf.
The shooting took place in the midst of a pending and highly polarized debate about whether the wolf has a place in Denmark anymore. And the specific case has only drawn the fronts even sharper. It is, as far as is known, the first time a wolf is slain at home since its re-immigration after 200 years of absence.
On the one hand, those who believe wolves should be shot if they show threatening behavior or repeatedly visit people. And on the other hand, they point out that the suspect was in a car when he shot a totally protected animal.
