The Wiring the Abyss 2015 expedition produced a first glimpse into the forensic pig experiment. This footage captures the first day after deployment as ocean creatures begin feeding on the two pig carcasses.
Dead pigs are used as models for human decomposition so that we can understand what happens to a body in the ocean as it decays, and use this information to interpret decompositional patterns and rates, as well as the marks left by scavengers, in human death investigations.
The experiment is led by Dr. Gail Anderson and Dr. Lynne Bell (Simon Fraser University).
