Inspired by slug slime, scientists have developed a sticky glue that will adhere to wet surfaces and that could someday work for wound and tissue repair. According to a study published in the journal Science, existing adhesives adhere weakly to tissues and cannot be used in wet environments. Researchers took inspiration from the mucus secreted by the western European slug. The Washington Post reports in experiments the glue was used to patch a hole in a pig heart -- the hole stayed plugged after more than 10,000 inflations. NPR reports it will take years before the glue might be available for human use. For now, researchers are working on developing a type of glue that will disintegrate once the organ heals.
