Tippy AFTER being counter conditioned to rough handling. In public, despite being vigilant, I have had children run up to her and grab her, adults as well.
Getting a dog to enjoy whatever rough handling a child may throw at it can prevent a bite. Tippy does not growl before a bite as she was likely punished for growling in a previous home. Punishing growling makes bites unpredictable and should never be done.
Also Tippy had major major confidence issues and now is no longer a fearful of 95% of the things she was before. Tippy was very shut down and terrified when i adopted her.
This is NOT a how to, This is the end result of over a year of gradually building criteria. The dog learns slowly that restraint and hands coming at them fast equal food/praise or other good things. This way if som' one does grab at her, her first impluse will not be to bite.
She enjoys this game as she cannot loose and was perfectly free to walk away from me if she wanted to, yet stayed engaged.
