Irene lumbered onto the New Jersey shoreline on Sunday morning on its way towards pummelling New York, which turned eerily quiet as the city hunkered down.
The US National Hurricane Center said the middle of the huge storm reached land near Little Egg Inlet at 05:35 local time. Seawater cascaded towards Wall Street and the labyrinth of cables and pipes beneath it.
