At Least 7 Killed, Including Suspect, in 'Planned Mass Murder' Near UC Santa Barbara
At least seven people - including the suspect - were killed in a mass shooting near the University of California, Santa Barbara.
Another seven people were injured in the Isla Vista neighborhood about 9:30 p.m. Friday, according to Santa Barbara County Sheriff Bill Brown. He repeatedly referred to the shooting as a planned mass murder.
A student told ABC affiliate KEYT-TV he saw shots fired from a BMW, fatally hitting one woman and critically injuring another woman.
"I heard shots, scream, pain," Michael Vitak said. "All emotions. I hope she is going to be fine."
The suspect crashed his car after exchanging gunfire with deputies, said Brown, and was found dead with an apparent gunshot wound to the head.
It's unclear if police shot him or if the wound was self-inflicted. Police also recovered a semiautomatic handgun from the suspect's car, said Brown.
Brown said that a YouTube video titled "Elliot Rodger's Retribution" appeared to be linked to the shooting.
In the video, a young man, who identified himself as Elliot Rodger, sits in the driver's seat of a car as he promises "retribution" and discusses his "loneliness, rejection and unfulfilled desires."
"Girls gave their affection and sex and love to other men but never to me," he says. He adds that it'll be his last video.
Police haven't confirmed whether the person who posted the video or man in it is the suspect.
"We're investigating that as evidence that we believe is connected to this crime," said Brown.
The conditions of those injured haven't been released. At least one person underwent surgery, according to the Santa Barbara Sheriff's Office.
Isla Vista is known for parties, including an annual spring bash that turned into a violent blowout last month as young people clashed with police and tossed rocks and bottles. A university police officer and four deputies were injured and 130 people were arrested.
