Vee's Vlog #2: Foundation Teriya

2021-03-30 11:31
In this vlog find out about a new iniciative that i started called Foundation Teriya. The aim is to set up a cultural center in Ouelessebougou (a village 80 km from Bamako, the capital of Mali). This village was the birthplace of my father, well-known and respected Malian writer and poet Gaoussou Diawara. The foundation was established in his honor. Our first goals are to create a cultural center with a library, an internet café, a recording studio, a video editing/broadcast studio and an outdoor performance stage. Local artists, musicians, and writers will be able to apply for a residency (Artist Residency Program) to create new works there. Cultural Tourism: In the long term, African culture lovers from all over the world will be able to attend workshops with local talent, thus helping local artists and at the same time learning something. Mali is the eighth-largest country in Africa, with an area of just over 1,240,000 square kilometres. The population of Mali is 19.1 million. Its capital is Bamako. The country's economy centres on agriculture and mining. One of Mali's most prominent natural resources is gold, and the country is the third largest producer of gold on the African continent. It also exports salt. Present-day Mali was once part of three West African empires that controlled trans-Saharan trade: the Ghana Empire (for which Ghana is named), the Mali Empire (for which Mali is named), and the Songhai Empire.  In the late 19th century, during the Scramble for Africa, France seized control of Mali, making it a part of French Sudan. Achieving independence in 1960 as the Mali Federation shortly thereafter, declared itself the independent Republic of Mali. After a long period of one-party rule, a coup in 1991 led to the writing of a new constitution and the establishment of Mali as a democratic, multi-party state. In January 2012, an armed conflict broke out in northern Mali, in which Tuareg rebels took control of a territory in the north. The conflict was complicated by a military coup that took place in March and later fighting between Tuareg and other rebel factions. On 18 August 2020, the nation's president and prime minister were arrested by the military in a coup d'état following a mutiny spurred by protests over continuing economic woes and a worsening national security situation, and the following day both resigned. Today, Mali is one of the three countries that have currently had military dictatorships.
